Driving traffic is one of the hottest topics when it comes to running any type of website. It is a critical element of any of online business, where targeted traffic produces conversions, and hence, leads and sales! 🙂
But traffic is also the greatest controversial headache that many a marketer faces, whether newbie or experienced. Frankly, I’m still learning myself on how to drive traffic higher volumes of targeted traffic. The fact is, it’s very challenging learning how to drive traffic successfully to your online websites, unless you’ve mastered the correct basic skills.

Thankfully, by learning some basics you can avoid some of the common pitfalls.

There Is No “Right” Way

One of the most common traps that beginners fall prey to is trying to find that “one special magic method” that will send them all the traffic they could possibly need. Unfortunately it just isn’t that simple. There are plenty of courses that will tell you that they have the secret, but what they are in reality is just a course that focuses on a specific method of driving traffic.
In reality, for 99% of website owners, just having one traffic method that runs on autopilot is just not quite enough to send those waves of eager buyers to their sites that they are hoping for.

There are actually dozens of methods that you can use to get traffic to your site, and you should learn about as many of them as possible. This is simply because different methods work for different websites, and you can’t know if one will work for you unless you have learnt how to implement it correctly.

Don’t let anyone tell you that there is just one “right” way to go about getting traffic. Be flexible, learn as much as you can, test and tweak, try to figure out what isn’t working, fix it, and go from there.

Pick a Few Methods

Many beginners either focus solely on one method of driving traffic, which probably isn’t going to cut it, or they try to get into too many methods and spread their time and resources too thin. The trick here is finding a balance between those two extremes. Many people who are successful at making money online started with 3-5 different methods of driving traffic and then sticking with those.

For example, you can choose to go with article marketing, twitter, and posting in relevant forums. Or you can choose blogging and social media. You can also choose to combine all of those, but what is most important is whether what you are using is working for you, and that you remain focused long enough to make each of these methods work effectively for you.
Be Patient and Run Tests
Not all traffic methods are equal, or will work equally well for everyone. Some people seem to excel at blogging while others can’t seem to get a good response, and some people just can’t afford solo ads or other methods that cost money – so you may need to change your plans after awhile. If you aren’t getting a good return on one method, switch to a different one after a month or two, or mix and match. Once you are making some money, try investing some of it back into traffic generation.
Use Common Sense
Finally, this is a huge point simply because there are so many new online business owners who just don’t stop to think about where they are really headed to. If you really can’t afford paid or outsourced traffic, then don’t be pushed into it. There are plenty of ways you can generate your own traffic using only your time instead of money for start. If a traffic method is promising loads of traffic that sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Try to stick to proven methods first and you will be more likely to see success.

By being smart about your traffic generation and committing time to it each day, consistency and focus is the key, and you should start seeing traffic results to your website that will build over time as you gain volume and momentum.
